Cavity Wall Insulation Removal

Damp patches on your internal walls? It could be your old cavity wall insulation failing. Over time, insulation can slump or become wet, bridging the gap for moisture to travel inside. We use specialist equipment to extract the old, wet material, clearing the cavity and allowing your walls to dry out properly.

Solving Damp and Cold Spots in Your Home

Cavity wall insulation was installed in millions of homes with the promise of lower heating bills and warmer rooms. For many, it works well. However, if the insulation was installed incorrectly, or if the material has become wet over time, it can cause serious problems for your property.

If you are suffering from unexplained damp patches on internal walls, peeling wallpaper, or "cold spots" that never seem to warm up, your cavity wall insulation might be to blame. At Prestige Group, we provide a specialist removal service that extracts the wet, failed material and allows your home to breathe again.

Why Does Insulation Fail?

Cavity wall insulation works by filling the air gap between your brick walls to trap heat. But if that gap is bridged by wet material, it acts like a sponge. Instead of keeping the cold out, it draws rainwater from the outside brickwork right through to your plasterboard.

Common reasons for failure include:

  • Driving Rain: In exposed areas of Norfolk, heavy rain can saturate the brickwork. If the insulation gets wet, it slumps and creates a bridge for damp.

  • Rubble in the Cavity: If the cavity wasn't cleared of builders' rubble before the insulation was blown in, it creates voids and cold spots where condensation forms.

  • Wrong Material: Some older types of urea-formaldehyde foam break down over time, turning to dust and settling at the bottom of the wall.

The Removal Process

We use a safe and effective method to remove the old insulation without damaging the structure of your house. We do not need to knock down walls or make a mess inside your home.

  1. Brick Removal: We carefully remove a few bricks at the bottom of the wall to create an extraction point.

  2. Compressed Air: We drill small holes in the mortar joints higher up the wall and use compressed air to loosen the insulation material.

  3. Extraction: A powerful industrial vacuum is connected to the bottom extraction point. This sucks out the old fibre, foam, or beads, leaving the cavity completely clear.

  4. Borescope Inspection: We use a specialist camera (borescope) to look inside the wall and ensure every last bit of insulation has been removed.

  5. Making Good: We replace the bricks and re-point the mortar holes with a colour-matched mix, so you can hardly tell we were there.

Let Your Walls Dry Out

Once the wet material is removed, the air can circulate freely in the cavity again. This allows your internal walls to dry out naturally over time. You should notice the damp smell disappearing and the walls feeling warmer to the touch.

Mortgage & Selling Issues

Just like spray foam in the loft, failed cavity wall insulation can sometimes be flagged by surveyors when you try to sell your home. If a surveyor spots damp caused by insulation, they may recommend retention on the mortgage until it is fixed.

We can provide the necessary documentation and photos to prove the cavity has been cleared, helping your sale proceed smoothly.

Get a Professional Assessment

If you suspect your insulation is causing damp, do not ignore it. It will likely get worse over time.

Give the team in the pink vans a call. We can carry out a borescope inspection to see exactly what is happening inside your walls. We will give you an honest assessment and a fixed price for the removal if it is needed.
